CWCI Schedules 2019 California Workers' Comp Case Law Seminars

Oakland - The California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) has announced that it will present its 2019 Case Law Seminar on Tuesday, May 7 in Long Beach and Thursday, May 9 in San Francisco.  The full-day program will examine how recent trends in decisional law are reshaping California workers’ compensation and discuss appropriate negotiation and defense strategies for claims personnel, attorneys, hearing reps, and others with negotiating authority.

This is the 21st year that the Institute has conducted the case law seminar, which will be presented by a panel of legal experts from Northern and Southern California, and moderated by CWCI General Counsel Ellen Sims Langille, who is overseeing development of the program.  Ms. Langille notes, “We are happy to welcome back veteran defense attorneys Saul Allweiss and Richard Jacobsmeyer to our faculty.  They will be joined by applicant attorney Elizabeth Hudson, who debuted last year, and who will provide real-world, practical insight from an applicant’s attorney perspective.  This unique combination of panelists will ensure that attendees gain a better understanding of how to use case law to effectively manage, negotiate, and defend claims, as well as what to expect from opposing counsel in litigated cases.”  The session will provide an update on recent rulings, identify issues related to recent statutory and regulatory changes, examine old case law to see what still applies and what does not, and offer workers’ compensation claims and legal professionals a fresh look at the impact of case law.  

The program will utilize a full audio-visual presentation to provide important case details, factual backgrounds, and other highlights for every case on the agenda.  All registered attendees will be provided with a link to the complete electronic version of the course materials (including hyperlinks to the actual decisions) one week prior to the seminar, to be downloaded to a laptop or printed out in advance.  Attendees also will have the option to pre-order a bound copy of the course materials at a nominal cost.

CWCI’s 2019 Case Law Seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 at The Grand Event Center in Long Beach and the program will be repeated on Thursday, May 9 at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco.  Tuition is $399, with a $100 discount available to CWCI member company employees.  The fee includes access to the course materials as well as a Continental breakfast, a luncheon, and refreshment breaks.  CWCI has received certification to offer 5.0 hours of Legal Specialization MCLE credits from the State Bar of California for this program.  In addition, the Institute will provide certificates of attendance upon completion of the program for submission to the Association of Hearing Representatives of California and for the verification of hours for those in need of credit for the California Department of Insurance workers’ compensation claims adjuster certification requirements.
