Registration Is Now Open for CWCI's 60th Annual Meeting

Date: 01/04/2024

Registration is now open for CWCI’s 60th Annual Meeting, a live event on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, 1547 Lakeside Dr., Oakland, California.

The theme for this year’s meeting is An Altered State:  The Shifting Role of California Workers’ Compensation, 1964 – 2024.  The program will examine how California’s unique political, business, and cultural landscape have shaped the state’s workers’ compensation system over the past 60 years, explain interstate differences, and explore various factors that continue to influence the structure and growth of the California workers’ compensation system.  The program will feature:

  • Keynote speaker Sarah Bohn, Vice President of Research and Senior Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, returns to our Annual Meeting to offer an update on the California economy and to discuss how the $64 billion deficit, one-party rule, and ongoing demographic changes will affect the state’s long-term business environment.

  • CWCI Senior Vice-President Rena David and President Alex Swedlow will review new research on workers’ compensation outcomes and issues that will be on the front burner in 2024.

  • CWCI Senior Vice-President and General Counsel Sara Widener-Brightwell and Chief Operating Officer Gideon Baum will review issues affecting our industry that are likely to be addressed in the courts and by state lawmakers in the year ahead.

  • The meeting will conclude with a panel discussion that will explore how cultural, political, and economic differences have influenced workers’ compensation outcomes in California and across the nation. Alex Swedlow will be joined by Ramona Tanabe, President and CEO of the Workers Compensation Research Institute, and Eric McGhee, Senior Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, who will offer their insights into how the California workers’ compensation system compares to other jurisdictions, the factors that have led to significant reforms to the California system over the past six decades, and current dynamics that could reshape the future role of workers’ compensation.

CWCI’s 60th Annual Meeting is free to CWCI member company employees, CWCI Emeritus, regulators, and the press; $350 for all others, but all attendees must pre-register.  The meeting will begin with a Continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and will include a luncheon at the nearby Lake Chalet Restaurant from noon to 1:00 p.m.

The Scottish Rite Center Oakland offers limited free parking (first come, first served), and is walking distance to the 12th Street, 19th Street, and Lake Merritt BART Stations.  For information on the Scottish Rite Center or hotel options, or to register, go to CWCI’s 60th Annual Meeting of Members.  If you have questions, call CWCI at 510-251-9470 or email Perla Medrano at pmedrano@cwci.org.
