Member Alert: Free CWCI Webinar on SB 1159, the COVID-19 Presumption Bill

Date: 09/09/2020

On August 31, the last day of the 2020 Legislative Session, state lawmakers passed SB 1159 (Hill), a compromise bill that will establish a presumption of compensability for COVID-19 cases.  The bill is awaiting signature by Governor Newsom, but was passed as an urgency measure, so as soon as he signs it, the law will take effect immediately

CWCI has been studying the intricacies of the compromise legislation and has prepared an in-depth training webinar that will explain the complicated aspects of how the presumption of compensability will apply to various segments of California’s workforce.  You and your staff are invited to join CWCI’s General Counsel, Ellen Sims Langille, and our Claims and Medical Director, Jackie Secia, next Monday (September 14) at 10 a.m. (Pacific) for the free, 1-hour webinar, SB 1159, The Proof Is in the Presumption, where you will learn about the different sets of rules that apply depending on date of injury, occupation, and positivity rates.  The program will also cover important new notification rules for employers under SB 1159 as well as under AB 685 (Reyes), which is also awaiting the Governor’s signature.

This is a must-see training opportunity for your claims department, defense attorneys, and anyone who wants to understand how the new presumptions will affect the California workers’ compensation system.  The initial broadcast of the webinar is for CWCI members only, after which the Institute will make it available to the public as a $99 on-demand webinar beginning next Wednesday.

Pre-registration is required.  CWCI has received certification to offer 1.0 hours of MCLE credits, including 1.0 hour of Workers’ Compensation Specialization credit, from the State Bar of California for the program.  Also, upon completion of the webinar, registrants can request a certificate of attendance for submission to the Association of Hearing Representatives of California and for verification of hours for those in need of credit for Department of Insurance workers’ compensation claims adjuster certification requirements.

We hope you can join us for this program.  To register, click here.  Log-in instructions will be emailed directly to all registrants after they sign up.  If you have questions, please call CWCI at 510-251-9470.
