CWCI Webinars: Preparing For New Medical Billing and E-Billing Standards

Date: 10/06/2011

Last April, the DWC adopted new medical billing standards for paper bills (effective October 15, 2011) and electronic billing standards (effective October 18, 2012). This week, the Institute conducted two separate programs in Oakland to familiarize claims managers, bill reviewers and others who deal with medical billing issues on these regulations. Demand for the programs was high, and capacity was limited, so both sessions sold out. Therefore, CWCI has decided to repeat the programs via webinar next Thursday — October 13.

The first program will be a 2.5 hour webinar (9-11:45 a.m.) that will review the general rules for medical treatment billing & payment, and will focus on the standards specific to paper billings. The second program (12:45-4:30 p.m.) will examine the e-billing standards, review the changes to the delayed WCIS regulations and outline the extensive preparations that will be necessary for billers, payors and others to meet the 2012 deadlines.

These programs will again be presented by CWCI Claims and Medical Director Brenda Ramirez and independent consultant Stacy Jones of Oakland-based SLJ Consulting, both of whom served on the DWC’s Task Force on California e-billing requirements and worked with the IAIABC EDI Medical and ProPay Committees to help develop national EDI standards for workers’ compensation. CWCI General Counsel Mike McClain will moderate each session.

Your staff members who register for the webinars can qualify for post-designation training hours and, if they convene in a classroom setting with an instructor, toward Department of Insurance claims adjuster and medical bill reviewer certification requirements. Upon request, after completing the program CWCI will issue certificates for each individual enrollee. The more technical afternoon program is especially helpful to programmers and technical staff who deal with medical billing and reimbursement matters, and those responsible for ensuring medical security. Because the general rules for both paper and electronic billing are covered in the morning session, it is recommended that those participating in the afternoon webinar also participate in the morning program.

The cost for CWCI member company employees is $100 per session; $150 for both. For nonmembers the cost is $150 per session, $250 for both. For those who are unavailable next Thursday, CWCI may offer these programs on our website as on-demand webinars at a later date. For more information, or to register for the October 13 webinars, go to the Seminar section of the CWCI website, www.cwci.org. Confirmations and instructions for participating in the webinar will be emailed to all enrollees.
