IAIABC Issues White Paper on the Use of Formularies in WC

Date: 05/16/2016

The Medical Issues Committee of the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions (IAIABC) recently published a comprehensive report on the use of formularies in workers’ compensation. CWCI Senior Research Associate Stacy Jones and CWCI President Alex Swedlow both contributed to the report, which is intended to provide public policymakers, regulators and workers’ compensation stakeholders with background information on what a formulary is and how it can be structured in workers’ compensation. The report describes the different types of workers’ compensation formularies that have already been adopted by various states, and includes a section on jurisdictional considerations and decision points that should be considered when developing and implementing a workers’ compensation formulary.

The information in this report is particularly timely for California, as the Division of Workers’ Compensation is currently developing the prescription drug formulary that was mandated by 2015 legislation (AB 1124). That formulary is scheduled for a phased-in adoption beginning in July 2017. To access the report, simply complete the form at www.iaiabc.org/Forms.asp?MODE=NEW&Forms_FormTypeID=-935. Please feel free to forward this information to others on your staff.
